Regarding Fort Myers

Fort Myers, formerly known as Fort Harvie, began its metamorphosis into a farming and ranching settlement in the late 1860s and 1870s. By the mid-1880s, Fort Myers had developed a commercial center and gained national attention for its local recreational fishing.

Lee County was formed from Monroe County in 1887. Following the completion of a railroad line between Fort Myers and Punta Gorda in 1904, a succession of building booms spurred the development of many new residential subdivisions beyond downtown, including Dean Park, Edison Park, and Seminole Park. The initial wooden buildings of downtown were gradually replaced by masonry and brick structures, many of which still stand today.History of Downtown Fort Myers

Fort Myers was founded in 1841 as a Seminole War Post known as Fort Harvie. In the late 1860s and 1870s, Fort Myers began to transform into a farming and ranching settlement. By the mid-1880s, Fort Myers had developed a commercial center and gained national attention for its local recreational fishing.

Fort Myers was established in 1885, and Lee County was formed in 1887 from Monroe County. The downtown area's initial wooden buildings were gradually replaced by masonry and brick structures, many of which still stand today. In 1924, a wooden bridge was built over the Caloosahatchee, appropriately nicknamed the Edison Bridge after its most famous winter resident.

Despite the fact that boom periods came and went over the years, Fort Myers expanded to become the political, commercial and social center of Southwest Florida.

The terrain of Southwest Florida has changed considerably in recent years, but our heritage and commitment to our colorful past remains.
