History of Lake Worth

Lake Worth Beach, formerly Lake Worth, is a city in east-central Palm Beach County, Florida, about 64 miles (103 kilometers) north of Miami. The city's name is derived from Lake Worth Lagoon, named after General William J. Worth, who led the United States Army forces during the latter stages of the Second Seminole War. Lake Worth Beach is located south of West Palm Beach, southeast of Lake Clarke Shores, east of Palm Springs, and north of Lantana, with a small area of the city also separating the town from Palm Beach. The population was 34,910 at the 2010 census, rising to 42,219 at the 2020 census.

Lake Worth Beach is part of the Miami metropolitan area, which had a population of 6,138,333 people in 2020.

While archaeological evidence suggests that the Jaega lived in the region thousands of years ago, Samuel and Fannie James, an African-American couple, were the first documented residents in present-day Lake Worth Beach in 1885, when they filed a homestead claim on 187 acres (76 ha). From 1889 to 1903, Fannie James ran the Jewell Post Office to serve the few people residing between Lantana and West Palm Beach. The Bryant & Greenwood land development project in the 1910s allowed homeowners to obtain land in exchange for purchasing a lot in present-day Greenacres.

As a result, the population grew from 38 in July 1912 to 308 just five months later. Lake Worth was incorporated in June 1913. After that, Lake Worth expanded dramatically during the land boom of the 1920s and the decades following World War II. In 2019, residents opted to officially change the name to Lake Worth Beach.
