History of Miami
The Miami metropolitan area is the seventh-largest in the United States and the 72nd-largest in the world. With 1,279.2 square miles of urban land mass, it is one of the most populous metropolitan urban centers in the world. The city of Miami serves as the financial and cultural center of the metropolis. The metropolitan area comprises Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties, which are the first, second, and third most populous in Florida. Miami-Dade County is the sixth-most populous in the United States. Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Pembroke Pines, West Palm Beach, Hialeah, Hollywood, and Boca Raton are among the major cities in the three counties. It is located in South Florida, which also encompasses the Everglades and the Florida Keys.
It is also associated with a region known as the "Gold Coast". The Miami metropolitan region (also known as Metro Miami) has 6,166,488 residents as of 2019, making it the most populous in Florida and the second-largest in the Southern United States. Greater Miami encompasses a broader region known as the Miami-Port St. Lucie-Fort Lauderdale Combined Statistical Area by the United States Census Bureau. North of Palm Beach County, this larger region comprises Martin, Saint Lucie, and Indian River counties.
Because South Florida's population is largely confined to a strip of land between the Atlantic Ocean and the Everglades, Miami's urbanized area (i.e., the area of contiguous urban development) is about 100 miles (160 km) long (north to south), but never more than 20 miles (32 km) wide, and in some areas only 5 miles (8 km) wide (east to west). With the exception of the New York metropolitan region, the Miami metropolitan statistical area is the largest in the United States. As of the 2000 census, it was the seventh-most densely populated urbanized region in the United States.
